  • Dosbox-x or ntvdmx64

    Which is your favorite? Dosbox-x or ntvdmx64? I am setting up another old desktop pc to run synchronet and am having problems getting ntvdmx64 to install correctly. I had no problem with the last two. I think defender is removing a critical .DLL during install. I know some sysops prefer dosbox x. I was curious about what you use.

    I use both for different reasons.

    I've been using ntvdmx64 since I moved my BBS to Windows 10 64-bit last year, and have had mostly good results. All the doors I want to run, run just fine. There were a handful I couldn't run, like Betrayal of the Obsidian Baboon and a few others that I can't recall and frankly don't care about anyway.

    The only reason I ever used (and still use) DOSBox-X is for Yankee Trader, since it's famously known for crashing. Emulating it lets allows it to run just fine crash-free.

    I got the ntvdmx64 installer to work this afternoon. I had to re enable microsoft defender and tell it that ldntvdm.dll was to be allowed and it worked fine. I had orginally turned it off before I tried to install it and it was being automatically deleted during install. I even tried to load it on a usb drive and move it over manually only to be deleted on the usb drive. So in my case turning windows defender back on again and telling microsoft defender it was allowed solved the problem. This was the opposite of how I did the install on the older laptop and the newer desktop. Everything works now.
