• MRC: Remove "ping" on username mention

Just a quick note: CTRL+M is ASCII Carriage Return (13), so probably not a good choice. :-)

Because maybe I'm at work and I don't want to be pinged but I'll check in when I'm ready to do so not because someone used my name.

Why would the user not mute the PC. Really? Because I'm on a web meeting perhaps? How would I hear the other people if I muted my PC? I guess the best option is just not to use it at all since it appears you don't want it to be user friendly. Adios.

Remember when web-sites used to automatically play audio (music, voices, sound effects) when you visited them? Yeah, it turns out people don't like that. :-)

Audio alerts and pop-up messages should be optional, I agree.

They were the worst. I have auto play off on my browser. I have popups disabled. Notifications on my cell phone are mostly switched off. I try to be as distraction free as possible. You're right, people don't like that stuff, especially when it appears out of nowhere and there's no way to turn it off. I just do without it.

I'm reminded of MySpace, and how they let users customize their account's web page with CSS themes as well as letting it play music when loading their page..

Also, years ago (around 2001, I think), there was a company called Frontier Labs that made MP3 players (I bought one of them, as it was much less expensive than an iPod), and for a little while, upon loading their web site, they had the web site play a voice of a child saying "Lucking Fovely Entertainment." It seemed a bit out of place and raondom, yet funny at the same time.. I don't know why they did that.

I would probably make it a `/` command then, like `/mute`.

    Thanks for calling that out.

Be that way if you want, but it's inaccurate. Maybe you missed it in my initial reply, but I described one way I would address the issue and also asked clarifying questions. That's how dialog works.

The website analogy that DM used is a fair one. I can see that. I'll work on a `/sounds` user toggle. And yes, it will be off by default.

    that.

My whole objection to this ping thing is that it wasn't there, and then
someone unilaterally decided it was a good idea that it should be
implemented for all users. I hate that shit, unless I ask for it, of
course :) It's kind of a double edged sword. New stuff should be
disabled by default and the sysop or user given a chance to enable it.
Not everyone is going to think that a change is useful or wanted.

I consider it a thoughtless infringement. But again, that's me. I get
annoyed by this stuff easily because it means I have to go and do stuff
I shouldn't have to/need to to get rid of it.

As for auto playing websites and that sort of stuff. Everybody likes to
play with new technology and see what it can do. Midi files autoplaying
was an interesting novelty that wore thin in a hurry. mp3s just as bad.
I can often be listening to something in headphones and then this noise
    blasts through out of nowhere.

These days if I go to a website and they popup one of those "subscribe"
boxes. I'm just done with the website. They obviously don't want me to
read their content, so I'm not going to waste time on it. I have a low tolerance level for website bullshit games. :)

Sounds are disabled as of commit e8d4a501917cea61af63b5f290782582e914fe9e on May 20, and can optionally be toggled on using the `/sound` command. I entered another merge request yesterday to correct an issue loading the saved chat_sounds setting at launch.

I'll close this if nothing more is needed.
